The School Safety Certification (SSC) training is for all employees of a school district or an open-enrollment charter school who hold a current license to carry (LTC) a handgun.
The material for the course was created by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), as the instructional guideline for Texas SSC Instructors to use in accordance with Texas Government Code §411.1901 to provide training for school district employees.
Course objective: The overall objective of this course is to educate school employees on the responsibilities related to school safety who are employees of a school district or open-enrollment charter school who hold a license to carry a handgun. Outlined objectives are:
- Protection of students
- Interaction of license holders with first responders
- Tactics for denying an intruder entry into a classroom or school facility
- Methods for increasing a license holders’ accuracy with a handgun while under duress
Student Pre-Exam Written and Handgun Proficiency Test
- The pre-student examination and handgun proficiency test will be conducted using the current License to Carry (LTC) course examination.
- In order to attend this training prospective students must score a 90% on the LTC written test and score 90% on the LTC handgun proficiency test before the SSC training starts.
Note: SSC pre-exam is the same written and proficiency test as for LTC but 90% is required prior to starting SSC versus 70% to pass LTC.
Student Final Examination
- Prior to the conclusion of the course the students must pass the final written examination with a score of 90% or better. Failing students may reapply as a new applicant for a future course.
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will receive a Texas DPS Student Certificate of Completion (LTC-97). The instructor will file a class completion form (LTC-95) with Texas DPS as a part of their License to Carry in accordance with Texas Government Code 411.1901.
Note: ANY school teacher or school district employee CAN take this course on their own and receive this certification regardless if your school allows you to carry in school or not.
Note: Although any school employee can receive this certification, you must still have permission from your ISD to carry on school premises.
* Anyone who want to attend the training, for informational purposes only, can attend but may not participate in any shooting exercises and will not take any written exams and receive. You will receive a “Certificate of Attendance”.
